Underground Tours of Old Sacramento

Beginning on Saturday, July 10, the entertaining and history-rich "Old Sacramento Underground" tours will provide visitors with a unique glimpse into the massive and dramatic raising of the streets of Sacramento in the 1860s through the 1870s to protect the city from devastating flooding. In fact, Old Sacramento has the distinction of being the only city in California to raise its streets and is also one of the very first in the nation to do so.

Underground tour visitors will have the opportunity to view disappearing windows and doors, dipping alleyways, exposed retaining walls, walk into underground hollow sidewalks and tour historic buildings, all while being entertained and educated by costumed tour guides and docents who portray characters true to the period.

      The title says it all, at best, you feel like you are visiting a basement. The tour provides a brief look at the development of Sacramento. Really, though, there's not much to actually see. It could work as a self-guided exhibit, but the tour is unnecessary. Collapse

      I attended the Underground Tour on the 31st. Unlike the previous reviewer, I had a wonderful time. The above ground section was interesting and important for context. Our guide was a wonderful balance... Expand

      I attended the Underground Tour on the 31st. Unlike the previous reviewer, I had a wonderful time. The above ground section was interesting and important for context. Our guide was a wonderful balance of entertainment and information. I wonder how exactly one can be unprofessional as a tour guide? I felt these tours were a welcome addition to the Old Sacramento experience. This tour is in its infancy. As sites become available I'm sure they will expand the tour. Still, this was a wonderful way to spend an afternoon. Collapse

      My husband and I went on the Old Sacramento Underground Tour on July 25 and came away disappointed. While the young lady who gave the tour tried hard, her presentation seemed disjointed and unprofessional. There wasn't much shown to us underground, and way too much time was spent walking around above ground, pointing out the effects of the raised buildings and sidewalks. We could have seen all that on our own. I think the whole underground tour needs to be re-worked. Collapse
