California Indians: Making a Difference
March 31, 2011-March 31, 2012
Add Review/Comment
Utilizing the voice and experiences of a diverse California Native Advisory Council, the exhibition highlights the unique contributions of the state’s Native Peoples and represents over 150 tribes from across the state.
Through the sights and sounds of art, photographs, documents, and interactive presentations, California Indians’ stories of cultural adaptation and triumph are told by those who know it best – themselves.
From the influx of Western settlers in the 19th century to urban migration in the 21st century, California Indians have not just survived but thrived in spite of over 200 years under the forces of assimilation. Their extraordinary history perpetuates the Golden State’s legacy of cultural diversity and resilience, revealing that California’s first inhabitants are as relevant to the present as they are to the past.
This permanent exhibit program will feature new artifacts during its second installation phase in 2012.
