O Romeo, Romeo! Wherefore art thou Romeo?
Those famous words have been uttered in almost every high school English class at some point in time. Romeo & Juliet was my first introduction to Shakespeare, and I was hooked. Over the years it has held a special place in my heart, and I always enjoy a fun retelling of the classic tale. That’s why & JULIET made for a perfect evening.
& JULIET takes the classic tale of Romeo & Juliet and gives it a modern-day twist. Imagine what would happen next if Juliet hadn’t ended it all over Romeo and got a second chance at life and love. The show also gives a creative reimaging to iconic pop songs like “I Want It That Way”, “…Baby One More Time”, “Roar”, and so much more.
With flash, pazazz, and a lot of humor, this is a can’t miss show. Each number had an unbelievable amount of production behind it. Some numbers went above and beyond with neon signs, high level choreography, pyrotechnics, and confetti. The costumes were thoughtfully put together, combining Elizabethan clothing with modern day fashion trends. They were colorful and bright, embracing the playful themes of the show.
The cast shined just as brightly as the production. Fabiola Caraballo Quijada was unbelievable. Quijada just graduated high school and is leading her first Broadway tour. Her talent was undeniable. She is going to go so far in the Broadway world and I personally can’t wait to follow her journey. Paul-Jordan Jansen and Kathryn Allison brought so many physical comedy moments to their roles the had the audience bursting out with laughter numerous times. The whole cast was fantastic and made the production such a joy to watch. I hope they felt all the love from the standing ovation.
& JULIET is a feel-good show that will have you laughing all the way home. From a star-studded cast to a high production value, this is a show I will be talking about for ages. & JULIET runs now through Oct. 5 at the SAFE Credit Union Performing Arts Center. It would be a tragedy to miss it! Learn more here.
